Steam idling, explained
Steam has no “are you actually playing?” check — any game that's running counts toward your hours. Idling exploits exactly that: launch a game, leave it alone, collect playtime and trading card drops. People have idled games since the trading card system launched, traditionally by leaving their PC on overnight or running tools like Idle Master and ArchiSteamFarm.
The catch with all desktop methods is the machine: something has to stay powered on, logged in and undisturbed. Cloud idling moves that job to our servers — your account idles around the clock and your own hardware stays free (and off).
Desktop idlers vs cloud idling
- Setup — desktop idlers need installs, configs and sometimes API keys. Cloud idling is a web dashboard: connect Steam, tick your games, done.
- Uptime— a desktop idler stops when Windows updates, the PC sleeps or a power cut hits. Servers don't sleep.
- Cost of running — a PC idling 24/7 quietly burns electricity every month. A free cloud plan burns none of yours.
- Playing together — SharpyBoost pauses automatically when you launch a game yourself and resumes when you close it.

What idled hours get you
Idled time is indistinguishable from played time: it raises the hours on your profile, advances playtime-gated unlocks and triggers trading card dropsyou can sell on the Community Market. Many users cover a premium plan's cost from card sales alone.
Start idling in about a minute
- 1. Create a free account — no card, no download.
- 2. Connect Steam via QR scan (the guide walks through every tap).
- 3.Select the games to idle and press start. That's it — close the tab, hours keep counting.
Steam idle questions
Idling means keeping a game running without playing it. Steam counts all running time as playtime, so idle hours show on your profile — and games with trading cards keep dropping them while idled.
Not with cloud idling. SharpyBoost runs your games on our always-on servers, so idling continues after you close the browser and shut down your PC.
Desktop idlers are free but need a machine running 24/7 and manual setup. Cloud idling needs no install, no open ports and no always-on PC — you manage everything from a web dashboard.
Idling is not bannable — it's the mechanic trading card farming has been built on for years. VAC only detects cheating in protected multiplayer servers, which idling never involves.
Yes. Card drops are based on playtime, so idled hours trigger drops exactly like played hours until each game's drops are exhausted.
